Following
So, I have been searching around for a good blog to follow and I have discovered that blogs are not as easy to find as I thought and when I do find them, I find them lacking. I think the reason for my unableness to find an interesting blog, is the fact that that most blogs are all opinionated. They're written from one individual's point of view and if that's the case, I would much rather have a verbal conversation about the topic, rather than scrolling through a bunch of text. I have also discovered that I'm a rather conservative person, who believes that personal opinions should not be displayed for anyone or everyone to read, primarily because it can come across as offensive, and people give meanings to words, not the other way around. Not to mention, the fact that it is difficult to create a tone of voice through the written word that accurately and appropriately describes one's emotions at the time of writing. I prefer informative text over the opinions of millions of people; thus I ask the question: what is the purpose of a blog?

That is an interesting question. I guess if you follow several blogs then you have the opportunity to piece together several different opinions. I think that blogs are useful for expressing our own learning and ideas, and can be accepted or disregarded by the reader. It is very true though, that information can easily be misconstrued if the reader misinterprets the meaning or the tone of the writer. Perhaps blogs are only useful as a tool to collect facts and weed out what is and is not useful information. And maybe as we read through someone elses learning processes we can find ways to better process our own learning. Who knows? Interesting.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Virginia, that blogs are useful in obtaining another point of view. I suppose that I need to remember that the sole purpose of blogging seems to be to display one's opinions of a variety of topics and not to expect to obtain a lot of solid factual information. After all, even our own blogs for this class are comments based on the experiences or opinionns on different topics. :)
ReplyDeleteAshley, did you check out my suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThere are many, many reasons people blog. Some are citizen reporters, some are trying to convince others of their opinion, some are sharing their explorations. I think that everyone has a point of view. They may share it overtly or covertly to varying degrees. As educators, we will have to help our students assess the validity and point of view of everything on the Internet.
With blogs, you can carry on a conversation via the comment feature. I have gained some great insights reading comments on interesting blog posts.
